The family of a nine year old Iowa girl who was infected with E. coli has filed suit against the Taco John's restaurant chain. Autumn Saul was hospitalized for severe kidney complications believes to stem from lettuce contaminated with E. coli and served on food items at the restaurant chain. She was diagnosed with hemolytic uremic syndrome.

HUS is a condition often linked to E. coli poisoning that can cause temporary and permanent kidney failure and affects about 20 percent of children exposed to E. coli.

"The good news is she had a blood transfusion, her condition has improved and as a result we're hopeful she will be home before the weekend is over," said Saul's attorney.

The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages, accused Taco John's of negligence and being liable for selling defective and dangerous food.

There are slightly fewer than 450 Taco John's restaurants in 26 states around the country.
