A comment on Book recommendations for those dealing with tragic loss of loved one | Ohio fatal accident lawyers

Good thought, Chuck. When Bad Things Happen to Good People is really good. The biggest thing that I took away form Rabbi Kushner, and which has helped me with friends and clients who have lost a loved one, is that grieving is part of the recovery process. We don't want to hear that Uncle Joe is in a better place, we just want to know that you support us while we grieve.

Other good selections are Who Dies?, by Stephen and Ondrea Levine; On Death And Dying, Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross; and Awakening From Grief, by John E. Welshons.

A comment on ATV accident case settles for $6.1 million

Mark: I'm not sure of the amount of money being excessive although it does seem like a lot for loss of one eye. I suspect the injuries include brain damage which would account for the settlement in the millions. While I don't want to argue with your point about the parent's taking responsibility for what they child is doing or awarding millions of dollars where it's not deserved I don't believe this news post explains all of the boy's damages or talks enough about the theory of liability or who was sued. For instance was the supervising adult, the ATV manufacturer or someone else sued? I can't tell from the report. So while I don't disagree with your point there is more to know than meets the eye. Maybe Chuck would follow-up with another post that more fully explains the above. Good comment though.

I feel bad for their loss, but this sort of thing really angers me... the parents need to take responsibility for their own choices! Who bought the ATV? Who allowed the boy to ride it? There is a reason this is called an accident... you can't fix stupid by giving them money they don't deserve.

A comment on Allstate considered worst insurance company for consumers, car accident claims go unpaid

Allstate must be pretty bad for this group to actually commit this to writing. As an agency owner operating in numerous states, we have found this situatin to be a very rare occurrence in our agency. I don't think this is an "across the board" problem in our industry. Most insurance companies are very diligent about fast claims ejudication and tend to be pretty empathetic to their clients. As representatives of 60+ insurance companies (Allstate is not one of them) and countless individuals and business entities, we rarely find policy holders with diffculties getting claims paid and obtaining quality representation. This Allstate situation, whether real or perceived is exactly why people ted to not have much confidence in the insurance industry.

A comment on How can dog bites be prevented?
The truth is - the incidence and frequency of dog attacks has remained relatively consistent over the last century, regardless of the popularity or involvement of certain breeds of dogs.
More ... More ...
Furthermore, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:

In 2005, 83 children died from maltreatment in Ohio.

In a SINGLE YEAR (2005), more than SEVEN TIMES as many children died from maltreatment (abuse/neglect) than the TOTAL of ALL fatal dog attacks in Ohio over the past 43 years.

So, are dogs a real danger? In fact, people in Ohio routinely accept far greater risks from ATVs, bicycles, and swimming pools than any that are associated with companion animals.
I know this is Tom Skeldon Territory but come on.
